Do you struggle with wrapping your head around how to get the whole family on-board to take photos together? Let me give you a few tips that will leave you feeling prepared and ready to book your next family photo session!
1) Plan what you’re going to wear beforehand
Think about the overall look you’re going for in your photos. Consider what colors look good on you and those in your family. Once you’ve decided on an overall color scheme or style, lay out everyone’s outfits and see how they all look together. Trust me, this step is truly worth it! This will also rid you of the headache of trying to figure out what everyone is going to wear just a few hours before the session. We don’t want to start a fight trying to figure that out at the last minute!
2) Make sure no one is wearing any Apple Watches or Fit bits, and remove cell phones from your pockets
If you know me, you know this is one of my biggest pet peeves. Having a piece of technology shown in a family photo is distracting. Twenty years from now, you don’t want to look back at your photos and say “What is that on my wrist, one of those old Apple Watches? I really wish I wasn’t wearing that in the photo!”. You also don’t want a cell phone in your pocket leaving a large rectangular outline right on your thigh. Keep it simple, leave the technology at home or in the car.
3) Fresh haircut and manicure is always a nice touch
Everyone looks better when a little bit of effort is put into our appearance. Meaning, we don’t want to look like we just rolled out of bed. Take the time to get yourself cleaned up with a fresh haircut and even a manicure. Use this as an opportunity to pamper yourself! A hint of lip color, gloss, or even lip balm, is always a nice touch as well.
4) Avoid clashing colors and patterns
These photos will last a lifetime, but those giant polka dots on a sweater may not be in style 10 years from now. You want all of your outfits to look cohesive and complimentary with one another. Avoiding clashing colors and patterns will enhance the overall natural beauty you and your family bring to your session.
5) Relax and enjoy the time you’re going to spend making memories together
Have fun! Don’t overthink it. These family photos you will look back on for years and remember how much they mean to you. Relax, have fun, and enjoy your time together as a family! I promise you will laugh and have fun!
